Challenge the Status Quo (2012)
In breaking down stereotypes through education, how do you make people understand why something like Kalimat exists? Based on this question, I began sketching several concepts. The final result was an eye chart which integrated existing, problematic stereotypes with terms that people do not normally associate with Arabs and aligned them with the vision score to the side. Where the letters would normally appear on a traditional eye chart, I embedded the message behind Kalimat: “challenge the status quo”. The interactive installation was accompanied by a video featuring the process of putting together and running a magazine, a reading station with a chair and copies of the printed issue as well as a quote by Jacques Attali (Il faut apprendre à juger une société à ses bruits, à son art, à ses fêtes plus qu'à ces statistiques) on vinyl.
